Slavery in Islam, a response to brother 1. Slavery was completely eradicated and abolished among the Arabs under the Khilapha of Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, to this day - it is ruled impermissible to enslave an Arab (whether Muslim or not). Those enslaved during the war of apostasy were freed unconditionally by Umar. 2. The conditions for compulsory manumission were legislated during his reign to encourage more people to free their slaves (at times even if the master didn't agree). 3. After Umar was killed in Madinah, an order was passed to reduce the slave population in the city (his murderer was a Persian slave). 4. Actually, during the Umayyad reign few slaves were taken according to records, they conquered new lands and simply charged Jizya, they didn't take slaves in large numbers as often claimed by the enemies of Islam, nor did they force conversions (to the contrary, they sought to minimise conversions) 5. Many scholars past and present have subscribed to the opinion that slavery was indeed "intended" to be phased out gradually. Sayyidna Umar's abrogation of the practice among all Arabs in the peninsula was a first step towards that and a clear precedent, at least proving that it wasn't a pillar in Islam and could very well be curtailed if not outright cancelled. 6. The Muslim world has since agreed unanimously that slavery is not legal anywhere in the world, there is consensus at state and government level. Just as slavery was a global convention in the classical epoch, the new global convention has been established and the Muslims like everyone else have accepted these terms. Slavery is as "Islamic" as riding horses and using swords in battle. It was a convenient of the epoch and Islam simply acknowledged and regulated the practice. The world of warfare has evolved (because slavery was a product of warfare, at least in strict Islamic lenses. A slave can only be taken in war). Now armies fight using tanks, jets, missiles and satellites. For those who insist on sticking to the old way of doing things because it's "Islamic", consider riding horses and using spears and swords in battle too. Slavery is NOT a pillar of Islam and Muslims are not obliged to champion slavery to prove anything to anyone. It's outdated and has no place in the modern world. We should not be contrarian just for the sake of being contrarian. These sorts of talking points are welcomed by far-right extremists who relish in seeing Muslims and Islam being presented in such light. And a little easy on Muslims who do not agree with the headline approach to Dawah. Not everyone who has an opinion is low IQ Barakallahu Feekum
