This month has been absolutely insane for the Muslim community in Britain. Riots, revolutions and confronting governments doesn't work for us Muslims. It never has and never will. When will we learn this lesson? Having had the privilege of speaking to a great number of elders from the Pakistani, Somali and Carribbean community over the past 30 years, it is apparent that their discipline and attitude despite being discriminated and granted very little opportunity when they arrived (they would pray Jumuah in hired halls or churches on SUNDAY because work was work and there were no Prayer breaks back in the 60s) helped them overcome some real obstacles. They do not take anything for granted in these lands. Unfortunately, the generations that followed have become a little bit too comfortable. Speaking as someone who has lived a numerous countries and experienced life as a Muslim in majority Muslim countries but also in places where we were the minority, I can assure you that the Muslim community in the UK is very privileged. Try living in France.... In any case, history repeats it's lessons and I genuinely believe we may be on the cusp of something very regrettable unless the Muslim community steps it's game up in the UK and by extension in the US too (though the demographic in the US is more affluent and educated, let's not open up that can of worms). With a crumbling economy, a radical change in political regime, major political crisis in the Middle East and an uncertain future for the new generation of citizens - many of whom will never have the job stability or access to property that was enjoyed by their predecessors....it appears as if all the conditions are ripe for something terrible. ... In times such as these, minorities are always a scapegoat. Just study Germany pre WW2 and the Jewish community there. They were also a little arrogant and would even threaten the German establishment with boycotts (read into it)... We are not far behind. Take nothing for granted. This is the land from which the Crusaders set forth after all. Dear Muslims in the West, be very careful, don't take things for granted. We are not at all far from Sarajevo, Cordoba or Berlin. Remember the St Bartholomew' Day in France. Your arrogance and entitlement is not going unnoticed. You are here to work, raise a family in peace and exemplify the message of Islam. Respect the laws and be an example citizen. Do not destroy public property, disturb the peace or take on the establishment - these things have a pattern and the result is generally a regrettable one. As a Muslim in Britain, I must admit - some of us take a lot for granted and are working very very hard to invite calamity upon the entire community. And, can we agree to stop making Takbir while destroying public property and vandalising community resources as the cameras are rolling?? Where is the benefit and honour in all of this. The riots breaking out up and down the country this past couple of weeks just so happens to coincide with the planning of a major patriotic march being organised for this coming Saturday (July 27th) in London. Which effectively means that the Muslims engaged in these riots are literally providing marketing and promotion helping recruit more people (to these marches) who would otherwise have remained neutral and tolerant towards the Muslim community. Meanwhile, a quick Google search reveals that no Muslim platform/organisation has alerted the community of this march or published any material guidance for a counter march or even advice warning women and children to stay indoors this weekend. Instead, we are online engaged in petty gender wars among ourselves. Has the Muslim community in the UK reached Ibn Khaldun's final stage of decadence?? WallAhi, I don't think we have much time left in these countries if this is the sort of example we insist on giving the natives. This is not our land guys, respect that fact. In any case. Sisters, elders and young ones. Please remain vigilant and if possible - stay indoors this weekend. May Allah help us all
